July 2019–April 2020
It has been another busy year for the grievance portfolio! More members have been seeking UTFA’s assistance, and we have been handling more files internally, than has historically been the case. We have also been engaged in drafting, revising, and bargaining a greater number of substantial policies, detailed below.
April 10, 2018 marks Equal Pay Day in Ontario. Equal Pay Day is intended to draw attention to the continued gap in earnings between men and women. First proclaimed by the Government of Ontario in 2014, Equal Pay Day is recognized on different dates internationally. In Ontario, the date is selected based on the gap in annual average earnings between men and women. Each year, the date is based on the amount of time women must work past December 31 before they earn the same amount as men. This year, this is an extra 3½ months, which is why the date is being recognized on April 10.
UTFA has received a legal opinion from Goldblatt Partners related to asbestos contamination.
Please see Asbestos Contamination in the Medical Sciences Building for more information.
During 2015–2016, the Grievance portfolio won two tenure appeals at the University Tenure Appeal Committee. In each case, UTAC granted a second tenure committee, which is the only possible result of a successful tenure appeal. In recent years, UTFA has secured a small number of second tenure committees through negotiation with the Office of the President.
