October 8, 2026

Dear Colleagues,

OCUFA has written to UTFA to ask for support in sharing two urgent solidarity actions with members in support of colleagues at Lakehead University and Algoma University. Please take a few minutes to review the information below and  show your solidarity with colleagues at Algoma and Lakehead.

Sincerely,

Jun Nogami
UTFA President

At Lakehead University, professors and professional librarians represented by Lakehead University Faculty Association are currently bargaining for a fair and just collective agreement. With the possibility of a strike mid-October, they are seeking improvements that will help sustain high-quality university education in the North and Simcoe County.

Supporting LUFA means supporting:

  • Accountable and transparent governance
  • Smaller classes and more course options for students
  • Innovative programs that respond to the needs of a modern economy
  • High-quality research and research opportunities for students
  • The recruitment and retention of academic talent at Lakehead University
  • A stronger positive impact on local communities and economies

Members can help avert a strike by sending an email to the Lakehead University Board of Governors here (https://lufa.org/negotiations-2026/).

At Algoma University, Part-Time Faculty represented by Algoma University Faculty Association have been without a collective agreement for over a year.

They are seeking a fair agreement that includes recognition for cancelled courses and fair wages that reflect the significant contributions Part-Time Faculty make to the university. Their bargaining proposals are intended to strengthen stability and continuity for both faculty and students. Supporting a fair collective agreement means supporting the retention of experienced instructors and the quality of education at Algoma University.

As they approach their first day of conciliation on November 12, we invite you to show your support for fairness for Part-Time Faculty by sending an email to Algoma University's senior administration here (https://actionnetwork.org/letters/support-fairness-for-algoma-u-part-time-faculty/).
