On this day of reflection, remembrance, and action, the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT), together with academic staff associations, honours the survivors of Canada’s residential school system who endured racism, violence and forced family separation.
We acknowledge the intergenerational trauma and the ongoing legacy of colonialism. Across post-secondary institutions, academic staff are actively challenging structures that marginalize Indigenous knowledge and cultures.
To support Indigenization efforts, CAUT offers the following resources:
- Policy statement on Indigenizing the academy
- Checklist on Indigenization of the academy
- Video: Why is Indigenization so important in the academy?
- Guide to Acknowledging First Peoples and Traditional Territory
Reconciliation demands sustained action, open dialogue and solidarity with Indigenous colleagues, students and communities. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action.
