On March 14, 2005, UTFA and the University Administration signed an agreement with regard to retirement matters and a letter of understanding with regard to retired faculty and librarians. With those two documents, a number of key initiatives were instituted. They included the end of mandatory retirement effective June 30, 2006, the elimination of the Voluntary Early Academic Retirement Program (VEARP), the introduction of three hours of retirement counseling, the introduction of the phased retirement program, and the establishment of a planning process for Senior Scholar/Retiree Centres.
