St. Michael's Faculty Association, Administration Reach Settlement

Following months of bargaining, the unionized faculty and librarians of the University of St. Michael’s College (USMC) have succeeded in negotiating a fair deal with the USMC administration. USMC faculty and librarians are represented in collective bargaining by the University of Toronto Faculty Association (UTFA).

The new tentative collective agreement, subject to ratification, is in place until June 30, 2020. UTFA and the USMC administration had been bargaining since spring 2017.

Strike deadline looms

TORONTO – This Friday, February 9, the unionized faculty and librarians of the University of St. Michael’s College (USMC) will enter one final round of negotiations with the USMC administration. USMC faculty and librarians are represented in collective bargaining by the University of Toronto Faculty Association (UTFA).

Negotiations have been at a standstill for months. Sticking points include:

January 10, 2018

On Friday, December 8, 2017 the unionized faculty and librarians of the University of St. Michael's College (represented by the University of Toronto Faculty Association) voted 86.4% in favour of authorizing a strike, if necessary. Representatives of UTFA and USMC have been in bargaining and provincial conciliation since August 2017. The outstanding issues are job security for faculty, language concerning diversity in hiring procedures, and a fair and equitable monetary settlement. Their next conciliation meeting is scheduled for January 19, 2018.

At its December 14th meeting, UTFA Council voted unanimously to ratify the recent settlement, most of the terms of which were agreed upon in mediation with Mr. Kevin Burkett and Mr. William Kaplan. Links to the full text of the agreement are provided at the bottom of this page, including the annual Across The Board (ATB) salary increases for faculty and librarians that were issued as an arbitration award by Mr. William Kaplan on November 27.

We are very pleased to advise you that with the assistance of Mediator/Arbitrator William Kaplan, UTFA and the University Administration have reached a mediated three-year agreement in salary, benefits and workload negotiations on all outstanding issues with the exception of Across the Board Salary (ATB) increases. The parties also agreed that ATBs will be arbitrated by Mr. Kaplan. The University Administration and UTFA have completed their submissions on this final issue to Mr. Kaplan and hope to receive his award shortly.
